Silicone materials offer unique physical properties as an industrial adhesive product range and are often termed as “sealants” or “adhesives” because of their unrivalled bonding ability. Cured Silicones are flexible, inert materials which have outstanding resistance to high and low temperatures with extremely good aging characteristics offering long service life. Based on an organic silicon-oxygen chemistry (similar to quartz, glass and sand) they are chemically inert and fully compatible with organic and synthetic materials.
‘RTV’ Silicone means a “Room Temperature Vulcanizing”. An RTV silicone cures by absorbing microscopic amounts of moisture from the air that we breathe. This moisture takes the place of a “by-product” which is given off during the curing process. This evaporates at room temperature allowing the product to change from a wet liquid to form a flexible cured rubber product.
RTV’s have widely accredited military, aerospace, automotive, medical, food and building approvals. There are several by-products of cure which determine the way that we catagorize the materials. These suit some applications better than others and are outlined as follows :-
This is the most widly known cure system which smells like vinegar. Acetic acid vapour is corrosive to certain metals so ‘Acetic’ products would not be used for electronic assemblies as the acid can corrode copper, silver, steel and alaminium. Food approvals are common to this cure type as they are non toxic and some grades will not contaminate food stuffs.
Hi-tech, non corrosive low odour products offering a fast tack free time and rapid cure. These products are modern day favorites, developed to be electronics friendly, pleasant smelling, fast curing systems that are compatible with most modern day materials such as plastics and specialist surface treatments. They cure by emitting low levels of alcahol which are non toxic and safe to electronic / sensitive metal assemblies.
A low cost alternative to ‘alcoxy’ products but these are not corrosive in the wasy that ‘Acetic Acid’ grades are. They cure very quickly and do not smell offensive. Offering excellent adhesion to all monor of subtrates including fabrics, plastics and metals they are very good general purpose materials.
The AXAD products have a modified catalyst which offers significant advantages over a standard one part RTV system. A one part RTV will generally cure to a depth of 25mm. These AXAD systems will cure to an infinate depth and they are virtually odourless. They offer 3-5 minute deep section gel time and handling times from just 25 minutes.
These type of materials are very specialised and do not require moisture to cure. The vulcanizastion occurs when heat is applied so these materials do not generally cure at room temperature. They lend them selves to high volume applications where the materials are often dispensed and cured on an automated production line at high speed.
